What is Caving?
Caves have been used as dwellings and places of refuge by humans from the times of our earliest ancestors and feature in many myths around the world. The sport of caving is all about exploring underground caves and the Mendip Hills has the largest underground cave network in the UK.
Goatchurch Cavern is about 60 metres deep, well over a kilometre long and formed through limestone rock. It's suitable for groups of mixed abilities and offers a complex network of floodwater maze passages with a mix of climbs, squeezes and features to explore and wonder at. It's a constant 11 degree temperature all year round and you'll experience darkness...total darkness. Stalactites dangle from the ceiling, stalagmites are growing from the ground and there are a myriad of fossils embedded in the sedimentary rock. A great experiences for cautious beginners to intrepid explorers.
How does it work?
You'll meet your instructor at the Goatchurch Cavern Car Park where parking is free. We will kit you out in a boiler suit, helmet and head torch and we recommend you wear a good base layer underneath and warm, comfortable old clothes which you don't mind getting muddy or damp. We have wellies available or you're welcome to bring you own. You'll go through a briefing before heading on a short walk to the cave entrance. Our instructor will tailor the session to your groups ability and allow you to progress at your own pace, ensuring your experience is unique and enjoyable.
Where does it take place?
Burrington Combe is around 15 mins drive from the Mendip Activity Centre and set in one of Southwest England's most special places - The Mendip Hills National Landscape.
