Try Caving
This 1.5 hour session is a fun and family-friendly introduction to the underground world
What is Try Caving?
Humans have explored caves for thousands of years, and modern Caving involves journeying through networks of underground tunnels and passageways. These can be natural or manmade and offer a unique chance to get up close to the history of our planet. Our Try Caving experience is a brilliant first step for families wanting a gentle, hands-on underground adventure. How does a Try Caving session work?
After a full safety briefing, you will be kitted out with a helmet and head torch. Please wear warm, comfortable clothes you do not mind getting muddy or damp. Wellies or walking boots are ideal, and we can provide wellies if needed. After a short walk to the underground mine shaft, you will scramble through the entrance into a fascinating network of tunnels with a rich and surprising history.Where does the Try Caving session take place?
Your adventure takes place in Sandford Levy, an abandoned cave and mine system once used as a secret WWII weapons base. Legend has it that the armoury was accidentally discovered by a local boy who was swiftly sworn to secrecy under the Official Secrets Act. Inside, you will encounter 350 million year old geology, calcites, gour pools, cave pearls and shark tooth stalactites and stalagmites. The cave is a short walk from Mendip Activity Centre, our 250-acre woodland estate in the Mendip Hills National Landscape. We are close to Bristol, Weston-super-Mare, the M5 motorway and well-connected by local transport links.
