What is the Learn to Lead Sport Climbing course?
This practical course teaches climbers how to safely lead sport climbing routes outdoors. You will learn the essential techniques required to progress from seconding routes to confidently leading climbs on bolted sport crags.The focus is on building good habits, safe systems and the confidence needed to climb independently at sport climbing venues.

Who can take part in the Learn to Lead Sport Climbing course?
Participants must be aged 16+ and already have some climbing experience.You should either have completed the Rock Skills Introduction Course or have climbed at least 20 routes on indoor walls or outdoor crags and belayed on at least 20 occasions.
How does the Learn to Lead Sport Climbing course work?
Across two days you will learn the practical systems and techniques required to safely lead sport routes outdoors, with plenty of time to practise and refine your skills on real rock.The course includes:
- Choosing appropriate venues and routes
- Movement skills for leading climbs
- Checking fixed equipment and bolts
- Clipping techniques when leading
- Threading and using lower-offs
- Belaying a lead climber
- Lowering safely
- Risk management at sport climbing crags
Where does the Learn to Lead Sport Climbing course take place?
Training takes place at sport climbing crags in South West England.Venues may include Sandford Quarry near Cheddar or Wyndcliff Quarry near Chepstow. Exact locations will be confirmed after booking.
Transport is not included.
