Learn to Lead Trad Rock Climbing

This three day Learn to Lead Trad Climbing course teaches you how to safely lead traditional rock climbs by placing your own protection!

What is the Learn to Lead Trad Climbing course?

This course introduces climbers to traditional (trad) rock climbing, where you place your own protection while leading routes. Over three days you will develop the knowledge, judgement and technical skills needed to lead trad routes safely and confidently.

The course focuses on safe systems, good decision making and building the confidence to climb independently on traditional rock.

Who can take part in the Learn to Lead Trad Climbing course?

Participants must be aged 16+ and already have some climbing experience.

You should have belayed on at least 20 occasions and seconded at least 20 rock climbs at VDiff or above, or have led at least 20 sport climbs either indoors or outdoors.

This course is ideal for climbers ready to progress into trad leading, experienced climbers wanting to refresh their skills, or those planning to work towards the Mountain Training Rock Climbing Instructor qualification.

How does the Learn to Lead Trad Climbing course work?

Across three days you will learn the systems, techniques and decision making needed to safely lead traditional routes. There will be plenty of time to practise placing protection, building anchors and leading climbs under the guidance of experienced instructors.

The course includes:
  • Choosing suitable venues and routes
  • Movement skills for leading climbs
  • Selecting, carrying and placing trad protection
  • Clipping protection while leading
  • Building safe anchors
  • Belaying a second climber
  • Risk management at trad climbing venues

Where does the Learn to Lead Trad Climbing course take place?

Training takes place at outdoor climbing crags in South West England.

Possible venues include Sand Point and Brean Down in Somerset, or Leigh Tor in Devon. Exact locations will be confirmed after booking.

Transport is not included.
