What is the Introduction to Rock Climbing Course?

This course is designed for anyone who wants to learn the fundamentals of Rock Climbing on real outdoor rock. With expert instruction and a full day at Mendip's private climbing quarry, you will develop the core skills needed to climb safely, understand equipment and make good decisions at the crag.

Who can take part in the Introduction to Rock Climbing Course?

This course is suitable for people aged 16+ who are either beginners or have limited experiences of climbing outdoors. If you are an indoor climber, this is a great way to learn how to climb outdoors! If you have never climbed, you may wish to try one of our Rock Climbing taster sessions with Mendip.

How does the Introduction to Rock Climbing Course work?

Led by experienced, qualified instructors, you will spend the day learning practical climbing skills on real limestone. You will have plenty of opportunity to climb, gaining hands-on experience and building confidence on the rock face.

The day includes:
  • How to put on a harness and tie in to a rope
  • How to belay safely
  • How to lower off
  • Movement skills and climbing on real rock
  • Crag ethics and etiquette
  • How to recognise and manage risk

Where does the Rock Climbing Course take place?

This course takes place at Mendip's private limestone quarry, Sandford Quarry, located close to the main site of Mendip Activity Centre near Cheddar in Somerset. Free parking is available at the quarry.

  • All centre-specific equipment is provided. If you have your own climbing gear, you are welcome to bring it along.
