Kayaking
What is kayaking?
Kayaks were created thousands of years ago by the Inuit (formerly known as Eskimos) of the northern Arctic regions for hunting and fishing. Kayak literally translates to hunters boat. Today, Kayaking is also a popular water sport, enjoyed by people of all ages and skill levels and our sessions are perfect for families or groups of friends. It offers a unique and immersive experience, gliding across the water and connecting with the beauty of the natural world. A kayak is a low-to-the-water, canoe-like boat in which the paddler sits facing forward, legs in front, using a double-bladed paddle to pull front-to-back on one side and then the other in rotation.
How does it work?
You'll meet your instructor at our private water sport site with it slow flowing water and gentle currents. Here you'll get kitted out in the required equipment including a properly fitted buoyancy aid for safety.
Next, you'll be shown how to get the most out of your kayak which has been designed for stability and ease of manoeuvrability. This will include paddling techniques to maintain control and other tips to hone your skills. Session include a mix of games and challenges designed to improve your paddling and water confidence. Your instructor will be on the water - right with you for coaching and safety.
Where does it take place?
Our kayaking sessions take place a 20 minute drive away from the main Mendip Activity Centre at our private and rural Hewish Activity Site. Located on Wick Road, just off the A370, near J21 of the M5. There is no postcode so coming off the A370, the marked gateway is on your right, just 100 metres past the RCH Brewery and just before the motorway bridge. Drive carefully and slowly on the gravel access track for 400 metres until you reach the Activity Site Car Park. Your kayaking instructor will meet you there shortly before your start time.
