The Youth Proficiency Scheme (YPS) Tutor's Diploma has been the basic qualification for the supervision of target shooting with air rifles. The course is delivered through a series of teaching and practical sessions by a qualified tutor to ensure that the student understands the precepts of safety and learns the skills necessary to enjoy the sport in a competitive manner. It is designed to ensure the safe and responsible handling of air rifles by young people and to introduce them to a sport where strength, stature, age or sex offer no advantage or disadvantage.

The Tutor's Course has been developed to qualify suitable people to deliver the Youth Proficiency Scheme and is a National Governing Body qualification designed primarily for leaders of youth organisations such as Scouts, those employed in the leisure industry and members of shooting clubs who would prefer a formal introduction to the sport for their younger members. Assessment is continuous throughout the course.
