This two hour Paddle Safer Award course gives you practical knowledge and confidence to paddle more safely in a kayak or canoe!

What is the Paddle Safer Award?

The Paddle Safer Award is a short practical course designed to help paddlers stay safe and make better decisions when kayaking or canoeing on sheltered water.

It focuses on essential safety knowledge, planning skills and simple rescue techniques so you can paddle more confidently and responsibly.

Who can take part in the Paddle Safer Award?

There are no formal pre-requisites for this course.

However, some people find it helpful to first attend a Mendip Try Kayaking or Try Canoeing session.

How does the Paddle Safer Award work?

During this practical session you will learn the key safety considerations for paddling on sheltered water and how to deal with common situations that paddlers may encounter.

The course includes:
  • Clothing and equipment advice for safe paddling
  • Understanding the paddling environment and changing weather conditions
  • How to plan simple paddling journeys
  • Practical rescue techniques and what to do if things go wrong
  • How to support each other and call for help if needed

Where does the Paddle Safer Award take place?

This course takes place at Mendip Activity Centre's private watersports venue in Hewish, North Somerset.

The venue provides calm, sheltered water ideal for learning practical paddling safety skills.
