Paddle Safer

A 2-hour personal skills course designed to give you top tips and considerations to support you to paddle safer in a Kayak or Canoe.

    • Where does the course take place?

    This course will take place at Mendip Activity Centre’s private watersports venue in North Somerset, Hewish.

    Are there any pre-requirements?

    Whilst there are no formal pre-requisites for this course, candidates might find it useful to first attend a Mendip Try Kayaking or Try Canoeing session.

    What's included in the Paddle Safer Award?
    As part of the course, you will learn:
  • Clothing and equipment information – everything you need to physically get yourself on the water and stay safe
  • The paddling environment – discussing and observing the sheltered water environment, based on the places you usually paddle, as well as what to look out for with the changing weather forecast
  • How to plan a journey with top tips around what to expect and look out for, considering your experience and ability
  • How to rescue each other and stay safe with practical solutions if you get into difficulty
  • How to support each other and call for help
