Teaching Orienteering Part 1 (TOP1)

A one-day course designed to teach people how to introduce the basic skills of Orienteering to beginners in a fun and exciting way.

  • Where does the course take place?

    The course will take place at Mendip Activity Centre in Somerset. Our 250-acre woodland estate is nestled in the Mendip Hills National Landscape, close to Bristol, Weston-super-Mare, and the M5.

    Are there any pre-requirements?

    This course is for those aged 16+ who want to teach orienteering in outdoor centres, schools, and with young people. Experience of orienteering is ideal but not essential.

    What's included in the Teaching Orienteering Part 1 (TOP1) course?
    As part of the course you will learn:
  • How to introduce children to orienteering in a safe environment
  • How to teach skills such as: the map as a bird’s eye view, the importance of north and map orientation, use of map colours and commonly used symbols, keeping in contact with the map and “thumbing”
  • How to plan and deliver sessions that meet British Orienteering safety standards
  • How to organise and deliver simple orienteering competitions
  • How to advise children on opportunities to further their orienteering experience

  • We will provide centre-spec equipment. If you have it, you may bring your own equipment if you wish.
  • There is no formal assessment as part of this course; on completion, candidates will receive a certificate of attendance.
