Kayaking

2 hour kayaking experience for beginners.

How does it work?

Meet your instructor at our private watersport site where you'll get kitted out in the required safety equipment before heading to the water. We'll start by explaining how to use the paddle, and what to do if you capsize. We tailor the session to your needs by mixing games and challenges designed to improve your paddling and water confidence. Your instructor will be on the water - right with you for coaching and safety.

Who are these activities for?

These activities are suitable for anyone aged eight or over. You have the option to book individual spaces on this session or, if no spaces have sold, you can book the session exclusively for your group of up to 10 people by selecting the "Private group" option. If you book the session exclusively we can relax the age restriction and you can bring children aged six or seven. If you have anyone under eight in your group at least one adult must take part.

Hewish is located on Wick Road, just off the A370, near J21 of the M5. As it is a rural site, there is no exact postcode. Coming from the A370, the marked gateway is on your right, just 100 metres past the RCH Brewery. Please drive carefully and slowly on the gravel track for 400 metres until you reach the gravel car park with dark green toilet block. Your Activity Instructor will meet you there shortly before your activity start time.

As an outdoor activity centre, we go ahead whatever the weather! The only exception to this rule is lightning directly overhead, which we monitor very closely and rarely stops play for more than a few minutes. Make sure you bring a change of clothes if it's raining, wrap up warm if it's windy, and drink plenty of fluids if it's hot. Make an adventure of it!!!

Yes! We are now able to accept gift vouchers again. You may use your voucher on any instructor led activity that your voucher is valid for. If your voucher was due to expire after 22nd March 2020, we have automatically extended it by 18 months so your codes will still work for an online booking.

All vouchers can be used for the value paid for them against any of our activities.

We will need a completed copy of our medical declaration. Where possible please print it out and bring it with you. We will have copies available on site.

Well behaved dogs are welcome to join you onsite however unfortunately, they can't join you on any of our activity sessions other than frisbee golf.

If you are bringing a dog with you, one of your party will have to not take part in the activity session to stay with the dog.

Yes! If you find an activity on a time and date that suits you, you are able to book for an exclusive group which means it will just be your group with the instructor. If you do this, once you have checked out, pop a note in the notes box to let us know its a stag or hen do and we'll make sure we're prepared.

If your group is larger than our group sizes or if you are looking for a more bespoke package, specific activity or to add multiple activities or a catering option, check out our Stag and Hen webpage here - www.mendip.co.uk/stagandhen

We can certainly arrange this activity for you. If you are booking for an educational/school group, please take a look at our dedicated webpage: https://www.mendip.co.uk/education

If you are booking for an organised youth group, please click here: https://www.mendip.co.uk/youthgroups

We're not going to lie, there's a chance you could get very wet! We would recommend old clothes and please avoid jeans and cotton where possible. You will need a pair of shoes you can wear in the water such as old trainers or daps (crocs or flipflops are not suitable). Please bring a change of clothes and a towel for afterwards.

No - you don't need you to be a good swimmer for any of our watersport activities. We will always provide you with a buoyancy aid. If you not a confident swimmer just let your instructor know at the start of the session.

Kayaking: Kayaks are for a single person per boat.

Open Canoeing: There will usually be two people per canoe, though in some cases we can allow up to three (three is the absolute maximum).

We can’t guarantee in advance that we’ll be able to cater to specific requests, however you’re welcome to speak to your instructor on arrival for the session and they will do their best to accommodate you. In most cases you will be able to choose who you’re in a boat with.

This activity takes place at our Hewish activity site. This is approximately a 15 minute drive from our main centre. The nearest postcode is BS24 6RR but please also check these directions:

General FAQ's

This ranges depending on the activity...

Tobogganing is available for ages 4+

Skiing is available for ages 5+

Snowboarding is for ages 8+ (but must also have at least a size 2 feet and be 1.2m tall)

Frisbee Golf does not have an age restriction and under 6's play for free

Our outdoor activity sessions can be run in two ways, with different minimum ages:

If you are booking individual spaces on an activity session, the minimum age for most activities is 8.

You are also able to book a session privately just for your group. If you book the session exclusively we can relax the age restriction to include children aged 6 or 7. At least one adult must take part and be included in the group if there is anyone taking part under the age of 8.

As an outdoor activity centre we go ahead whatever the weather! The only exception to this rule is lightning directly over the centre, which we monitor very closely. Make sure you bring a change of clothes if it's raining, wrap up warm if it's windy, and drink plenty of fluids if it's hot. Make an adventure of it!!!

All of our activity sites have plenty of parking onsite. Parking is free of charge.

We are very fortunate to be situated in such a stunning location set in the Mendip hills. Unfortunately, this does come with its limitations. We have recently installed a lift in our main centre which allows disabled access to our cafe-bar.

The paths leading to our onsite activities can be fairly muddy and uneven. Pushchairs/wheelchairs/mobility scooters may struggle depending on what part of the site they are trying to access.

Please view our full accessibility statement here: www.mendip.co.uk/accessibility

You will receive a confirmation email from us once your booking has been made. Sometimes this email can end up in your junk folder, so please check there first if you can't find it.

If you can't find a confirmation email, your online booking may not have been fully completed - please check whether the session you were trying to book is still available online. If it is, please try to make the booking again. If it's not, please contact us so that we can check what's happened.
