What is a Hill Skills and Navigation Course?
This is a one day course designed for anyone who wants to learn how to hike safely and confidently in the hills. You will spend the day learning essential navigation skills, how to plan a great route and how to stay safe while exploring new terrain. It is the perfect way to gain independence outdoors under the guidance of experienced instructors.Who can take part in this Hill Skills course?
This course is for people aged 16+ who want to build confidence to explore beyond familiar footpaths. No previous experience is required, just a willingness to learn and spend the day outdoors.How does the Hill Skills and Navigation Course work?
You will begin your day at Mendip Activity Centre before heading out into the Mendip Hills National Landscape. Through a mix of coaching, practical exercises and short journeys, you will learn how to plan routes, use navigation tools and make confident decisions in the outdoors.The day includes:
- How to plan a walk in the hills
- What to take and how to pack
- Navigation skills for hill environments
- Recognising common hazards and how to manage them
- What to do in an emergency
Where does the Hill Walking take place?
This course takes place in the Mendip Hills, starting at Mendip Activity Centre. Our 250-acre woodland estate sits within the Mendip Hills National Landscape near Bristol, Weston-super-Mare and the M5, offering the perfect base for hill skills training.Important Information!
- Always check the weather forecast and dress appropriately for a full day outdoors.
- Please bring a suitable day bag with food, water, waterproofs and sturdy footwear.
- We will provide navigation resources. If you already have your own, you are welcome to use them.
