The training takes place at Mendip Activity Centre in Somerset.

Are there any pre-requirements?

This course is available for anyone aged 18+. No prior experience is necessary, although some familiarity with air rifles is ideal.

What's included in the Air Rifle Instructor Course?

The Youth Proficiency Scheme (YPS) Tutor's Diploma is the foundational qualification for supervising target shooting with air rifles. Designed by the National Small-bore Rifle Association (NSRA), it ensures the safe and responsible handling of air rifles and introduces participants to the sport of competitive shooting. This course is ideal for leaders of youth organizations such as Scouts, leisure industry professionals, and members of shooting clubs aiming to provide structured and formal instruction. The course includes:

  • Safety, range construction, and legal requirements
  • Technical skills: stance, aiming, trigger control, and breathing techniques
  • Session planning, delivery, and progress tracking
  • Equipment handling: air rifles, ammunition, and dealing with malfunctions
  • Fun and competitive activities: shooting games and competitions
