Teaching Orienteering Part 1 (TOP1)

This one day Teaching Orienteering Part 1 course teaches you how to introduce the basic skills of orienteering to beginners in a fun and engaging way!

What is the Teaching Orienteering Part 1 course?

Teaching Orienteering Part 1 (TOP1) is a practical course designed to help instructors, teachers and youth leaders introduce the fundamentals of orienteering to beginners. The focus is on delivering fun, safe and engaging sessions that build confidence and understanding of map reading and navigation.

Who can take part in the Teaching Orienteering Part 1 course?

This course is suitable for anyone aged 16+ who wants to teach orienteering in outdoor centres, schools or youth organisations. Previous orienteering experience is helpful but not essential.

How does the Teaching Orienteering Part 1 course work?

Throughout the day you will learn how to introduce the key skills of orienteering and how to structure sessions that help beginners learn through games, challenges and simple navigation exercises.

During the course you will learn:
  • How to introduce children to orienteering in a safe environment
  • Understanding the map as a bird's eye view
  • The importance of north and map orientation
  • Using map colours and commonly used symbols
  • How to keep in contact with the map and use "thumbing"
  • Planning and delivering sessions that meet British Orienteering safety standards
  • How to organise simple orienteering competitions
  • How to support young people to progress in the sport

Where does the Teaching Orienteering Part 1 course take place?

The course takes place at Mendip Activity Centre in Somerset. Our 250-acre woodland estate sits in the Mendip Hills National Landscape, close to Bristol, Weston-super-Mare and the M5, providing the perfect outdoor learning environment.
