Try Caving
What is Try Caving?
Humans have been using caves and caverns for thousands of years and the adventurous activity of caving involves exploring underground through networks of tunnels and passageways. These can be natural or artificial (manmade) and you'll get up and close and personal with the geological history of our planet. Whilst it's good to push beyond your comfort zone to learn more and achieve things, we know caves can make some people feel nervous or uncomfortable..don't worry..your qualified instructor will be with you throughout your adventure!
How does it work?
After a full safety briefing you'll be kitted out with a helmet and head torch. We recommend you wear a good base layer underneath and warm, comfortable old clothes which you don't mind getting muddy or damp. Wellies or walking boots are great, trainers are okay. We can provide wellies if needed. After a short walk to the underground mine shaft you'll scramble through the mine entrance to begin exploring the secret underground tunnel with a fascinating history.
Where does it take place?
The abandoned cave/mine you'll explore is called Sandford Levy. It was used as a secret weapons base during WWII, the armoury being accidentally discovered by a local boy who was promptly sworn to secrecy under the Officials Secrets Act. You'll get up close with 350 million year old geology, calcites, gour pools, cave pearls and shark teeth stalactites and stalagmites. Keep an eye out..cavers have been searching for the most famous lost cave in the Mendip Hills for decades and an entrance to an underground abyss more than 40 fathoms deep is believed to be somewhere within the mine.
The cave/mine is located a short walk from Mendip Activity Centre, our beautiful 250-acre woodland estate set in one of Southwest England's most special places - The Mendip Hills National Landscape. We are close to Bristol and Weston Super Mare, the M5 motorway and with local rail and bus connections nearby.
