Raft Building
What is raft building?
Raft building is an engaging outdoor team activity which involves working out the best way to assemble your own functional floating platform, capable of paddling team members across a body of water. You use materials such as wooden poles, rope, and barrels tied together using knots and lashings. Raft building is a fun, hands on activity that encourages teamwork, communication, problem-solving, and creativity.
How does it work?
You'll meet your instructor at our private water sport site with it slow flowing water and gentle currents. Here you'll get kitted out in the required equipment including a properly fitted buoyancy aid for safety. Your instructor will guide each team how to turn a limited set of materials into a raft capable of being launched and keeping your crew afloat and dry. You'll be shown how to get the raft moving in the right direction and then you'll head down our river to race your raft and complete a number of challenges before using it as a launch platform for jumping off!
Where does it take place?
Our raft building sessions take place a 20 minute drive away from the main Mendip Activity Centre at our private and rural Hewish Activity Site. Located on Wick Road, just off the A370, near J21 of the M5. There is no postcode so coming off the A370, the marked gateway is on your right, just 100 metres past the RCH Brewery and just before the motorway bridge. Drive carefully and slowly on the gravel access track for 400 metres until you reach the Activity Site Car Park. Your instructor will meet you there shortly before your start time.
