Rock Climbing
This two hour Rock Climbing session is a thrilling introduction to climbing on real limestone rock in Sandford Quarry.
What is Rock Climbing?
Rock climbing involves using your body to move up, down or across natural rock faces while safely secured with ropes and climbing equipment.It is an exciting challenge that builds confidence, problem solving skills and teamwork. Reaching the top of a climb delivers a real sense of achievement and is an unforgettable experience to share with friends or family.
How does the Rock Climbing session work?
Your climbing session takes place on a real limestone rock face and no previous experience is required.After putting on your climbing equipment, your instructor will show you how to tie into the rope and introduce belaying, the technique used to safely control the rope while your climbing partner ascends.
Our highly qualified instructors will guide you through the experience, helping you build confidence as you take turns climbing and belaying. During the session you may tackle several different climbs on the quarry walls.
Where does Rock Climbing take place?
This session takes place at our private limestone quarry, Sandford Quarry, located close to Mendip Activity Centre.Access options include:
- You can drive into the quarry. The instructor will meet you in the main tier. The access track is uneven so please drive slowly and carefully.
- You may park outside and walk into the quarry. Quarry Road is a public road so please park courteously and avoid blocking residents' driveways.
- If staying on our campsite, the walk into the quarry offers stunning views across the Bristol Channel and towards Wales on a clear day.
Who can take part in Rock Climbing?
Sessions can be booked in the following ways:- Individual spaces (Age 8+)
- Exclusive private group for up to 10 people (Ages 6+). If you book this option we can relax the child age restriction to 6+, provided at least one participating adult (18+) is present.
Important Information!
- Facilities at the quarry are basic. During summer months portaloos are available and additional toilets and refreshments are a short five minute drive away at Mendip Activity Centre.
- Well behaved dogs are welcome onsite but cannot join the climbing session.
