Orienteering
What is Orienteering?
Orienteering is an exciting and challenging outdoor sport that involves navigating between neon-coloured checkpoints called controls marked on a map. At each checkpoint, you punch a control box with a handheld punch device. Usually it is at a pace and level that suits you, be it walking or running. You'll need to call on your navigation skills and concentrate as it's all about being able to figure out where you are on your map so you can decide where to go next. The most important skill is orienting the map, looking for a prominent feature around you like a fence or a road, and rotate the map to match. There is no set route so the skill and fun comes from trying to find the best way to go.
How does it work?
Orienteering is one of our self-led activities. Book for the number of people who'd like to take part. Once we've given you your map and a thorough briefing you'll be left to navigate the 2km course. It could take up to 1.5 hours to complete, depending on your group size, abilities and whether you're going to do it at a nice leisurely pace or as a race!. There are no set session times so you can take as long as you like.
Where does it take place?
Orienteering is located at Mendip Activity Centre, our beautiful 250-acre woodland estate set in one of Southwest England's most special places - The Mendip Hills National Landscape. We are close to Bristol and Weston Super Mare, the M5 motorway and with local rail and bus connections nearby.
Who can take part?
Orienteering is suitable for anyone aged 6+. Younger children are welcome to take participate for free and enjoy exploring the land. Under 16's must be accompanied by an adult (18+).
