Orienteering
Self-led orienteering at Mendip Activity Centre is a fun outdoor adventure for families, friends and groups. Navigate your way around our woodland course using a map, finding checkpoints at your own pace.
What is Orienteering?
Orienteering is an exciting outdoor navigation activity where you use a map to find a series of checkpoints, known as controls, around the course. At each checkpoint, you mark your progress using a handheld punch device.
There is no set route, so the fun comes from working out where you are, choosing where to go next and deciding the best way to reach each control. You can take it at your own pace, whether that's a relaxed walk with the family or a friendly race with your group.
The key skill is learning to orientate your map. Look for a clear feature around you, such as a path, fence or road, then rotate the map to match your surroundings. Once you've got the hang of it, you're off!
How does it work?
Orienteering is one of our self-led activities. Simply book for the number of people taking part, then when you arrive our team will provide your map, explain how everything works and give you a full briefing before you head out.
You'll then navigate our 2km course independently. The route can take up to 1.5 hours to complete, depending on your group size, ability and whether you choose to enjoy it at a leisurely pace or turn it into a challenge.
There are no fixed session times, so you can take your time and enjoy exploring the course.
Where does it take place?
Orienteering takes place at Mendip Activity Centre, our beautiful 250-acre woodland estate in the Mendip Hills National Landscape, one of Southwest England's most special outdoor areas.
We're close to Bristol, Weston-super-Mare and the M5 motorway, with local rail and bus connections nearby.
Who can take part?
Orienteering is suitable for ages 6+. Younger children are welcome to join in for free and enjoy exploring the site with the rest of the group.
Under 16s must be accompanied by an adult aged 18+.
