British Canoeing Paddlesport Safety & Rescue

A one day course designed to develop your safety and rescue skills and to gain a qualification.

Location
Hewish Watersports Centre. If conditions change, this may take place at Clevedon Marine Lake.

Who is this for?
Anyoned aged 14+ can take part in this course. There is no formal requirement for previous experience for this course however we would recommend that you have some paddling experience. Please note that there is a minimum requirement of 4 participants. If we do not have 4 people booked onto a course, we will contact you to rearrange.

How do I book?
1. Choose your number of participants and then use the date selector to find the date.
2. Once you have booked onto our course you will need to become a British Canoeing Member at the following address: https://members.britishcanoeing.org.uk/. Choose the "on the water" option.

Course content
This course covers the strategies and skills required to keep you safe on sheltered water environments. You will cover the following 6 areas:
-Clothing and Equipment: What to wear and take
-Safety frameworks: Weather, Safety principles and Rescue protocols
-Contact and Towing rescues: Assisting and towing paddlers and recovering equipment
-Self-rescues
-Deep water rescues: Different techniques for different crafts and different situations
-Reflection and development
You will develop and improve your rescue skills, build experience and hopefully have a really good time! Click here to find out more about the course content.

What's next?
This course is a requirement if you would like to take part in the Paddlesport Instructor award..

What should I bring to the course?
We will provide all boats and safety equipment. You are welcome to bring your own boats and own safety equipment if you have them. You are extremely likely to get wet so wear appropriate clothes and bring a spare pair of clothes and a towel. If you own a wet suit or a dry suit, we recommend bringing this.

Funding
If you are a member of a canoe club, you may be entitled to some support from them or from British Canoeing. Contact the treasurer of your club or the Paddlesport Development Officier for your region.
